3 Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Ghostwriter
If you want to serve high-earning clients, then you have to up your game and provide them with stellar service and high-quality content. They don’t want beginner advice; they’re well past that stage in business. They want advanced strategies, brand new techniques, and in-depth analysis of how they can improve their business.
When it comes to writing your content, you have two options: write all the content yourself or hire someone to do it for you. Ghostwriting is a legitimate occupation in which you hire a writer to write your content but you own all the rights and can place your name on it. The ghostwriter doesn’t hold any rights to the work and cannot use it themselves or sell it to another client.
So, if your calendar is full of clients but you want to produce a signature program, hiring a ghostwriter is a valid next step. However, just because someone says they’re a writer doesn’t mean they are the right person for this job. Here are some important questions to ask before you hire a ghostwriter.
1. ASK FOR REFERENCES AND WRITING SAMPLES.
The process of hiring a virtual team member should be the same as interviewing for an in-house employee. Always ask for references and samples of their work. References will confirm if they met deadlines and if the process of working with them was pleasant. Work samples will show if they have the writing style you’re looking for and just how good their writing is. In this unregulated industry, anyone can say they’re a writer; the proof is in the writing samples.
2. ASK ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE.
If a ghostwriter only has experience writing blog posts, then a large, 10-module premier course may not be the right project for them. Likewise, someone who writes 400-page hardcover autobiographies may not be the right fit, either. Look for a writer who obviously can write, who has an easy-to-read style, and who has experience researching and writing larger projects.
3. ASK ABOUT THEIR OWN WORK HABITS.
How many other projects do they have on their calendar? How much time do they expect your project would take? Can they start right away or is there a wait time? Are they in the same time zone as you? Do they work nights while you work during the day? Communication is important, especially if the writer has questions they need clarified, so time zones and work hours may become a problem if they aren’t the same as yours.
Once you settle on a ghostwriter, send them a contract and a nondisclosure agreement to sign. Be specific on the contract in terms of deadlines, the content you expect to receive, and any other significant details. Both are legal documents that can be enforced if the writer divulges any information to the public, another client, or simply doesn’t produce the work expected.
